Close up of the Cook memorial in the church of St Andrew the Great. This is a memorial to all of the Cook family although only three members were actually buried in this church. The Cook coat of arms is featured at the base of the memorial, but at the time that this photograph was taken several parts of the crest were missing.

Don’t forget to clean your grill before you use it by scrubbing the grilling surface with a wire brush while it heats up. This way the removed food and grease burn off. Built up food on the grill doesn’t add flavor to the meat, but make the fresh food stick to the metal much easier.

If you accidentally add too much salt to a soup or sauce, you can reduce the saltiness by placing a whole peeled potato in the pot for a while. The potato will absorb some of the salt and make the soup more palatable. Just remember to remove the potato before serving the dish.

If you are unsure of your boiling potatoes are done it would help if you stuck them with a knife. If the potato comes out of the water stuck on the knife then it means that they are not ready yet, but if they slide off easily then they are done.

Flour or any other dry goods stored too long, tend to attract bugs and make them either hard to use or not suitable for cooking. Lay a whole bay leaf in the container (and possibly also in the cupboard) and your goods and storage areas will be bug free forever.

To ripen fruits like tomatoes, pears and bananas faster, place the pieces of fruit in a paper bag along with an apple of any variety. Apples emit ethylene gas — a natural plant hormone — as they ripen, which will affect the fruit inside the paper bag, accelerating their natural ripening process.

Now that you have read these great cooking tips, you can go into the kitchen armed with the knowledge that whatever dish you cook, you will impress your friends, family, and guests the way you want to! So, head over to the kitchen and get cracking.

  1. I agree – there are a frightening number of epople who simply know how to cook. There was a course run by “super grans” in the area where I used to work that covered things like boiling potatoes and shopping for the basics (flour, milk etc). There were issues though, that a lot thought it was “too hard” and the food taste as good as the highly sugared and salted processed foods been eating.

reneee.. James nailed it. So your exposed metal is then coated in ferric chloride (or whatever) and its removed. I then use a dremmel with a soft wire brush + acetone.

    Here are exact process images:

    1. PCB lasered to reveal metal (black traces)

    2. Chemically Etched. Paint still on.

    3. A PCB is born.

    Hope that helps.
